As self-proclaimed fume-heads, we constantly seek ways to elevate our perfume wear. With perfume enthusiasts sharing tips and tricks to take your perfume application to the next level, here are 10 essential tips guaranteed to have fragrances staying on for hours!

Applying Perfume Straight out of the Shower
Application of perfume straight out of the shower is a step that I didn’t know I needed. The application of perfume and then following up with moisturiser and body oils locks in the initial layer of perfume application before going back in again. Also, applying it onto damp skin allows for greater product absorption. Resulting in deeper penetration of the fragrance.
Exfoliation is a Must
Exfoliation is a significant step to consider in your hygiene routine when looking to elongate your perfume wear. There are several benefits to regular exfoliation, further explained here. Benefits that directly affect the efficacy of your perfume application. Exfoliation is the process of the removal of dead skin cells from the surface of your skin. Therefore, increasing cell renewal. This results in smoother and brighter skin and a prepped base with improved product absorption. Improved product absorption means a base good at retaining moisture, which is perfect for clinging to fragrance.
Moisturising is Key for Perfume Wear
Moisturising goes hand in hand with exfoliation. Moisturised skin is significant in creating a good base preparation for the application of fragrances. This spans from your scented body oils to your perfumes. Similarly to an exfoliated base, a base that is moisturised increases product absorption. This product absorption is further amplified through our next tip!
Moisturise on Damp Skin
After a fresh shower, don’t make the mistake that I did, and dry yourself fully before applying your body lotions. Applying moisturiser to damp skin is an amazing way to lock in moisture. Moisturising damp skin increases the ability of your moisturisers, lotions, and body oils to penetrate the skin deeper. Not only has adopting this into my routine helped elongate my perfume’s longevity, but has ensured hydrated skin. Something harder to achieve due to my past with dry skin and eczema.
Oil-Based Preparation
Oil-based preparation has been a game changer in my perfume wear. Applying a body oil to lock in the scent is again a nod to good base preparation for increased product absorption of fragrances. Additionally, applying a layer of body oil after applying perfume on your body, ideally on your pulse points, helps to lock in the product. Therefore, elongating longevity whilst maintaining moisturised, smooth, and hydrated skin. That smells good, and looks even healthier.
Be Intentional with Perfume Placement
Being intentional with where and how you apply your fragrances is important, and has a direct impact on your perfume’s performance. Long gone should be the days of applying your fragrances through misting. This involves the old practice of misting a fragrance into the air and walking through it as a way of application. Not only does this waste a ton of product, but does nothing to elevate your perfume wear.
As perfume enthusiasts, we all know that our love and passion for fragrances is by no means a cheap one. So the last thing you want is to waste your product. Intentionality with perfume placement means application on your pulse points, inclusive of behind the ears, back of the neck, wrists, and more.
Fabric is your Best Friend
Spraying perfume on your clothes is arguably one of the best perfume hacks. Not only does spraying on fabric elongate perfume wear, but is a great alternative way of applying perfume for those with sensitive skin. Spraying on fabric is perfect for fragrances to cling onto, and negates worrying about how a fragrance’s scent profile will interact with your body chemistry. Fabrics act like a blank canvas for fragrances, with being able to smell the true scent profile of a fragrance without your body chemistry coming into play.

Become a Trailblazer
Spraying perfume on the back of your neck and/or shoulder blades is guaranteed to create a silage in your wake. Alternatively, for those of us who want to avoid perfume application directly on our skin, applying it on the collar or neckline of your clothes has the same effect.
Multi-Purpose Vaseline
Applying vaseline on your pulse points for spraying your fragrances can have the same effect as body oil. Not only locking in the fragrance but another way to add moisture to your skin.
Layering Your Fragrances
Layer your different fragrances to give your current perfumes more depth. A great way to improve the performance of a perfume is through layering. Layering can improve the overall performance of your perfumes by increasing their longevity and projection. A combination of creams and stronger products with your weaker ones, such as Eau de Toilette can result in a stronger scent profile.
